Day 22

We not only worship the greatness of God, but delight in the tender love of His heart towards us.

‘And hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us.’ (Romans 5:5)

If we see God just as the all-knowing One, we may reduce Him to the equivalent of a powerful celestial computer. We might worship and admire a God like that, but we won’t enjoy communion with Him. God is not only intelligence and might, He also has a heart. Man’s heart and God’s heart connect early in the Bible in sad circumstances. In Genesis 6:5, ‘The Lord saw...that every inclination of the thoughts of the human heart was only evil all thetime’. This was God’s response: ‘The Lord regretted that he had made human beings on the earth, and his heart was deeply troubled’’ (Genesis 6:6). Man’s heart was evil and God’s heart was ‘deeply troubled’.

God is not all intelligence, nor all power, but He is love. Our admiration of His power and might is secondary to our enjoyment of His love. Our response of worship includes saying with Isaiah, ‘My soul rejoices in my God’ (Isaiah 61:10). The even more marvelous truth is that “The Lord ... delights in the well-being of his servant” (Psalm 35:27). We rejoice in Him and He delights in us. We love Him with ‘all our hearts’ as we connect with the love of His heart for us. It is a heart to heart relationship of love.
