Day 27
Whatever controls our heart is our treasure.
‘Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.’ (Matthew 6:19-21)
Everyone lays up treasure in some way. It may not be expressed in the range of our assets or the size of our bank accounts. But there is something for all of us that gives us reason to get out of bed in the morning. It is that which reveals our true treasure.
Jesus said, ‘Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.’ Whatever controls our heart is our treasure. The treasure we have is either ‘earthly’ or ‘heavenly.’ There can be no compromise between the two. Jesus says that we cannot serve God and money.
The reality is that no matter how heavenly our interest may be, we live on earth subject to its demands, its pressures and values. But Jesus reminds us that we cannot serve both masters. We live in one sphere under the rule of the other.
What is your treasure? Our master is either the Lord or the things of this world. Everything we do is a consequence of that which we choose.
What price are you willing to pay? What are you still holding onto?
