Verse For Today
“For everyone who asks receives; he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks, the door will be opened.” —MATTHEW 7:8
Devotional
How does a person begin to seek Jesus? Where do we look? Although the fingerprints of God are in all of creation and in our consciences, we will only ever find Jesus in the Bible. Our appetites may be whetted by seeing Jesus in someone else’s life, but the Bible is the only revelation of Christ God has given us.
To humankind God also gave the capacity to question. We are the only order of life that is plagued with such thoughts as: “There has to be more to life than this. Why are we here? What’s it all about?” God has given us an inbred sense of eternity, and these are thoughts and questions He whispers into our hearts. As we begin to respond, He’ll lead us a step further. Creation. Think about it. Conscience. Why am I concerned about things? Follow that through and it will all lead to Christ.
Jesus says of Himself, “For the Son of Man came to seek and to save that which was lost” (Luke 19:10). To be described as lost means to be wanted and to be wanted implies value. Every person is of incredible value to Jesus, and that is the starting point of His relationship with us. When we reach outside of ourselves to something far greater, He reveals Himself in ways that are unique to each of us.
Jesus is also pursuing people even if they are resistant. Isaiah 65:1-2 says, “To a nation that did not call on my name, I said, ‘Here am I, here am I’. All day long I have held out my hands to an obstinate people, who walk in ways not good, pursuing their own imaginations....” In other words, the initiator in our relationship with God is God. He searches even when we don’t care to be found, and in our restlessness, often begins to work in us. We may be unaware at the time, but it is His Spirit drawing us to Him.
Though we live in a society that is increasingly antagonistic towards the Gospel, Jesus will always break through walls of deception and doubt. As He moves towards us, the world begins to make sense, and as He enters our lives, fear and uncertainty are replaced with His abiding peace. The Bible becomes the Living Word, all about Jesus from beginning to end; Jesus who reconciles us to God, dwells in our hearts and restores our souls. If we are seeking Him, He is seeking us.
