Verse For Today
“But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have become convinced of, because you know those from whom you learned it, and how from infancy you have known the holy scriptures...” —2 TIMOTHY 3:14
Devotional
Christian faith does not fall into the category of personal choice or preferential beliefs. It falls into the category of truth or error - it’s either right or wrong. The Bible is objective truth, meaning it stands alone in its facts and cannot be subject to change, nor taken away from or added to. Its teachings are timeless and deliver the same moral code for us today as God intended for Adam and Eve.
However, in this increasingly complex world, new doctrines are steadily appearing and are consistently subject to change. To conform to the needs of people, one doctrine emerges from another until we have a multitude of choices that, unless we are firmly rooted in Scripture, will cloud our judgment. To know the one true God, we must turn to our Bibles where the doctrine of Christianity is pure and unchanging.
Paul wrote to Timothy, “Watch your life and doctrine closely. Persevere in them because if you do, you will save both yourself and your hearers” (1 Timothy 4:16). Later, in his second letter, Paul warns Timothy, “For the time will come when men will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear” (2 Timothy 4:3).
What itching ears want to hear may ring true for a majority of people, but truth is not found by consensus. Regardless of how many people believe the same thing, that doesn’t make it true. Christian doctrine is not man’s subjective ideas about God. Truth is found in revelation from God about Himself and His ideas about men. Throughout Scripture, God makes Himself known, revealing His character, His purpose and His desire for us.
The true Christian movement has its roots firmly planted in a systematic exposure of Scripture where we understand it, and form what we are doing and how we act on the basis of what God reveals in His word. Every passage needs to be given in light of the entire contextual meaning so as not to be misconstrued.
Isaiah 45:19 says, “I, the LORD, speak the truth; I declare what is right.” God’s word is objective truth, which makes it true for everyone, and for everything God wants us to know, His word is all-inclusive and does not change.
