Day 2
“Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, was one of the two who heard what John had said and who had followed Jesus.” — JOHN 1:40
Andrew seemed much of the time to be relegated to the shadow of his more robust, outspoken brother, Simon Peter. Andrew was originally a disciple of John the Baptist, but John gave him away to Jesus! John was the forerunner who paved the way for Christ, but when he baptized Him and Jesus became public, John made himself dispensable and gave his own disciples away. You have found Him, Andrew! Go with Jesus.
Along with another disciple, Andrew then asked Jesus what seems on the surface to be a mediocre question, but actually holds profound significance. “Where are you staying?” they asked. “Come,” Jesus replied, “And you will see.” Included here, by implication, is the very essence of the Gospel. ‘Where do you live?’
During His public ministry, Jesus seems to have been of no fixed abode, but His real home is in the hearts of His people. Jesus said, “If anyone loves me, he will obey my teaching. My Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him” (John 14:23). To visit Jesus in His home is to find Him in His people.
Andrew was the disciple who was often approached by strangers, but all he did was take them to Jesus. On the three occasions where Andrew is specifically mentioned, he is bringing someone to Jesus. First, his younger brother, Simon, and then a young boy with two fish and five loaves of barley bread. In John, Chapter 12, when some Greek people had asked Philip if they could see Jesus, Philip brought them to Andrew, who then took them to Jesus. Andrew took every opportunity to bring people to Christ…. and leave them with Him. That is our task – to direct people to Christ so that they deal directly with Him themselves. It is Jesus Christ, not the church or the preacher or the witness who will transform a person’s life. Therefore, our task is to simply bring people to Jesus, and to do that, we need to find out where He lives, and invite them there.
PRAYER: Dear Heavenly Father, I want to share Andrew’s vision and ask that You make me a lover of people so I may lead others to You. When they meet You, it is You who transform their lives.
TO REFLECT UPON: Am I alert to opportunities the Lord gives me in leading others to Him? Do I rest in the fact that Jesus will take over and that He will reveal Himself to them?
