Verse For Today
“I guide you in the way of wisdom and lead you along straight paths.” —PROVERBS 4:11
Devotional
When the Hebrew people crossed the Red Sea into freedom, they became a nation that needed to be re-established and governed. On Mount Sinai, God gave Moses the Ten Commandments in order to reveal His moral character, which then served as laws to govern the people.
In today’s world, however, tolerance lies at the heart of society. Almost anything is acceptable as long as no one gets hurt, but the problem is that without God’s laws, people do get hurt and end up hurting others. We talk about information technology, easily and readily available to us, but there is no such thing as ‘wisdom technology’. Children gain knowledge at school, but they need to gain wisdom at home. As parents, it is our responsibility to teach our children moral ethics and values. There is no greater preparation or sustenance for their futures than for them to grow in the wisdom of God.
Deuteronomy 4:40 says, “Keep His decrees and commands, which I am giving you today, so that it will go well with you and your children after you.” As we obey God, that, in itself, will make an impact. We need to let our children see the reality of God in our lives, not just when the sun is shining and the sky is blue. It is especially when clouds are the darkest that God reveals Himself, and our children need to see that it is in His strength we weather the storm.
Teaching our children to give thanks to God in all circumstances and even the little things in life will instill in them not only an awareness of His presence, but lead them to become dependent upon Him. In years to come they will always have God to fall back on and there is tremendous liberation in that.
Our children are entrusted to us by God. Parenting is a privilege, and in teaching them of God’s love and wisdom, we honour Him and we honour our children. The best legacy we can leave them is that through our example, they will have gained the desire to know God for themselves, to love and depend upon Him, and to pass that desire onto their children.

Prayer
Lord, help me to set a good example for my children. I want them to grow up knowing You, so in years to come, they’ll always have You to depend on and guide their way. Thank You, Lord.
Reflection
Am I teaching my children wisdom that comes from God, and encouraging them to become men and women of God?
